What is XRP / US Dollar?

XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, an open-source blockchain originally associated with the payments company Ripple and designed for fast, low-cost settlement, including cross-border payments.

The XRP Ledger uses a consensus protocol operated by a network of independently run validators, rather than proof-of-work mining or traditional proof-of-stake, to agree on transaction ordering. A large portion of total XRP supply was pre-mined at launch, with a share held in escrow accounts that release XRP on a scheduled basis.

How to read this chart

A rising line means XRP is gaining value in US dollar terms; falling means the opposite. As with other crypto pairs, trading is continuous with no formal weekly close.

XRP's price has historically been sensitive to legal and regulatory developments concerning its issuer-adjacent entities, which can produce sharp, event-driven moves distinct from broader market trends. Scheduled escrow releases add periodic new supply to the market, and prices can differ between exchanges.

What moves it?

Legal and regulatory developments
Court rulings and regulatory actions concerning Ripple and the classification of XRP in various jurisdictions have historically produced some of the largest price moves in XRP's history.
Escrow releases
A substantial share of total XRP supply is held in escrow and released on a defined schedule, which can affect available circulating supply.
Payments and partnership activity
Adoption of XRP-based products for cross-border payments and liquidity provision by financial institutions can influence demand.
Broader crypto risk sentiment
XRP, like most major tokens, tends to move with overall risk appetite across the crypto market.

Why businesses and investors monitor it

Firms involved in cross-border payments, remittances or liquidity provision that use XRP-based infrastructure track this price for operational and treasury purposes. It also serves as an indicator of sentiment around regulatory clarity for cryptoassets more broadly.

XRP vs bitcoin

XRP and bitcoin differ substantially in design: XRP was purpose-built for fast settlement through a validator-based consensus protocol, while bitcoin prioritises decentralisation and fixed monetary policy through proof-of-work mining.

Comparing XRP/USD with BTC/USD shows how far payments-focused tokens move relative to the largest and most established cryptoasset, particularly around regulatory news specific to XRP.

Frequently asked questions

Is XRP the same as Ripple?

No. Ripple is a private payments technology company; XRP is an independent digital asset that runs on the XRP Ledger, which Ripple uses in some of its products but does not control outright.

How does the XRP Ledger reach consensus?

It uses a consensus protocol in which a network of independently operated validators agree on transaction ordering, rather than proof-of-work mining or conventional staking.

What are XRP escrow releases?

A large share of total XRP supply is locked in escrow accounts that release a capped amount of XRP each month, adding to circulating supply on a predictable schedule.

Why has XRP's price been affected by legal cases?

Court and regulatory decisions on whether XRP should be treated as a security in certain jurisdictions have created significant uncertainty at times, which markets have priced in through sharp moves.
