Why is there no official worldwide LEI price?

The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation manages the Global LEI System, but legal entities obtain their identifiers through accredited LEI Issuers, also known as Local Operating Units.

A business may also apply through a Registration Agent working with an accredited issuer.

GLEIF explains that legal entities can choose any issuer accredited to serve their jurisdiction. This competition means providers can offer different prices, service levels and registration periods.

The fee charged to the customer is therefore not a government filing fee or a single global tariff. It is the provider's charge for completing and maintaining the required LEI services.

According to GLEIF, issuer fees must follow the cost-recovery principles of the Global LEI System. However, that does not require every issuer or registration agent to charge the same amount.

What does the LEI registration fee pay for?

Is the GLEIF contribution the complete cost?

No.

GLEIF receives a per-LEI contribution from accredited issuers for issued and renewed LEIs. Providers generally incorporate this contribution into their retail pricing.

However, the GLEIF contribution is only one component of the total customer price. The provider must also cover validation, registry access, technology, administration, support and ongoing record maintenance.

When a website says that its price "includes the GLEIF fee," this does not mean that the entire payment goes to GLEIF.

Check whether the advertised amount includes:

• Business-register retrieval
• Initial validation
• Annual revalidation

Registration cost versus renewal cost

Initial registration and renewal are related but different services.

Initial registration

A new application requires the provider to:

• Confirm that the organisation is eligible
• Check that it does not already have an LEI
• Establish its reference data
• Validate that information against authoritative sources
• Review applicable parent relationships
• Issue and publish the new identifier

Annual renewal

Renewal requires the managing issuer to review and revalidate the existing reference data.

Why must an LEI be renewed annually?

The identifier remains assigned to the same legal entity, but the information connected to it must remain current.

The annual renewal process allows the LEI issuer to compare the entity's data with authoritative records again. If the scheduled renewal is missed, the LEI record can receive a lapsed registration status.

A lapsed LEI is not reassigned to another company, and the code does not disappear. However, a broker, bank or reporting institution may require an issued and current record before accepting it for a regulated transaction.

This means the relevant cost is often not merely the initial application fee. A company expecting to use the LEI for several years should compare the total cost of maintaining it.

How do multi-year LEI packages work?

A multi-year package normally means that the provider agrees to manage the necessary annual revalidations throughout the purchased period.

It does not mean that the provider validates the information once and gives the record five years of untouched validity.

Before buying a multi-year package, check:

• Whether the full amount is paid in advance
• Whether annual revalidation is included
• Whether the provider contacts you when company information changes
• Whether VAT is included
• Whether the package renews automatically at the end
• Whether unused years are refundable
• What happens if the company closes, merges or no longer needs the LEI
• Whether the LEI can still be transferred to another issuer
• How future corporate changes are handled

A multi-year plan may be economical for an established company that expects to need an active LEI continuously. A one-year plan may offer more flexibility when the future requirement is uncertain.

What can increase the final LEI cost?

VAT and other taxes

An advertised price may exclude VAT or another applicable tax.

The final treatment can depend on:

• Provider location
• Customer location
• Whether the customer is a business or consumer
• Whether a valid VAT number is supplied
• Domestic or cross-border tax rules
• Currency used for payment

Do not assume that "€49" means the final card charge will be exactly €49.

Registry access

Some official business registers are freely accessible. Others charge for extracts, documents or detailed company information.

A provider may include these costs in its standard fee or add a jurisdiction-specific charge.

Complex legal structures

A straightforward limited company listed in a public register is normally easier to validate than a structure involving:

• A trust
• A fund or sub-fund
• A non-public register
• Multiple parent relationships
• Recently completed corporate changes
• Documents in another language
• An applicant acting for an unrelated entity

These cases may require additional documents or manual review.

Currency conversion

A company paying in a different currency may incur:

• Provider exchange-rate margins
• Card-network conversion charges
• Bank fees

Compare the amount that will actually be charged rather than converting only the headline price.

Optional add-ons

Some providers sell additional services such as:

A decorative certificate does not make an LEI more valid. The authoritative evidence is the LEI record published through the Global LEI System.

Does transferring an LEI cost money?

A legal entity is allowed to move the management of its LEI from one accredited issuer to another.

GLEIF's issuer contract requirements state that no fee should be assessed for the transfer itself.

However, transfer and renewal are not the same operation. A receiving provider may offer:

• A free transfer without extending the renewal date
• A free transfer combined with a paid renewal
• A transfer-and-renewal package
• A multi-year renewal beginning after the transfer

If the LEI is already lapsed or approaching its renewal date, a renewal payment may be required even though the transfer itself is free.

The LEI code remains unchanged after a transfer. Do not apply for a new LEI simply to change providers.

Does renewing a lapsed LEI cost more?

Do not compare one provider's pre-tax annual price with another provider's tax-inclusive multi-year average.

Practical ways to control the total cost include:

1. Check whether an LEI already exists. Never pay for a duplicate application.
2. Confirm that the LEI is actually required. Ask the requesting institution before applying.
