What is Total crypto market cap?
Total crypto market capitalisation multiplies each tracked cryptoasset's circulating supply by its current price, then sums those values across the market. That's fundamentally different from a single asset's price, which is just the exchange rate for one unit.
Because it depends on both price and circulating supply, it can move for reasons unrelated to any individual coin's price - such as new assets being added to the calculation or large revisions to a token's reported circulating supply.
How to read this chart
A rising line means the estimated aggregate value of tracked cryptoassets is increasing; falling means the opposite. As with individual pairs, the data updates continuously, so there's no session close or weekend gap.
A small number of large assets, particularly bitcoin, can drive most of the movement in total market cap, so don't read it as an equally weighted measure of the whole market. New listings, delistings and supply-data revisions can also shift the aggregate independent of any price action.

- Bitcoin makes up a large share of total market capitalisation, so its price moves have an outsized effect on the aggregate figure.
- Stablecoin supply growth
- Growth or contraction in major stablecoin supply reflects capital moving into or out of crypto, and can lead broader market-cap changes.

- Adding newly tracked cryptoassets to the calculation can lift the aggregate figure independent of price moves in existing assets.
- Broad risk sentiment and macro conditions
- General risk appetite, US monetary policy and dollar liquidity conditions influence flows into and out of crypto as a whole.

Businesses assessing the overall size and health of the crypto sector, rather than one asset, use total market capitalisation as a broad gauge of sector-wide risk appetite and capital flows.
